A design guide to support social and emotional learning
Visual and Information Design. 7 month long project (Aug 2022-Mar 2023)
QUICK SUMMARY
Completed for the Center for Advanced Design Research and Evaluation (CADRE) in partnership with HKS, Inc., Uplift Education, and ASIDF. This design guide synthesizes research from various sources for programming spaces in educational environments.
Getting Started…
CONTEXT
The visual design guide is both a library of evidence-based design (EBD) strategies formatted as a tool for designers of learning environments to quickly reference during the design process. Whether the intention is to create an enriched environment, understand the impact design strategies have on students and teachers, or both - the EBD strategy cards are a tool to utilize to create enriched environments that support social and emotional learning.
GOAL
It is anchored by the neuroscience informed framework, enriched environments to demonstrate how the design of physical space can be used as a tool to support or augment existing pedagogical practices in classrooms - advancing the agenda to provide students with social and emotional learning competencies.
ROLE
This project was completed in collaboration with researchers in architecture, interior design, and education.

ENRICHED ENVIRONMENTS
To support social and emotional learning in the classroom
The front portion of the design guide provides readers with the research backing the concepts and strategies found in the back portion. It synthesizes two models of education to promote SEL via incorporation of specific strategies in the classroom. It can be used by both designers, and educators.
